I had lunch there today. I don't think you'll see the place empty at lunch time anytime soon.

New Restauarnts in Market Square Food Court

The food court in Brunswick Square is now home to Taro Taco, and will soon have Barred Rock Chicken and Poutine selling fried chicken and poutine.

Real Food Connections–Fresh Food now available in the evening uptown

Real Food Connections has now opened in uptown Saint John (34 Canterbury Street).

This is great news particularly for those of us who might want to shop for fresh produce and local foods after the City Market closes (which is 6 pm on weeknights, but a lot of vendors start packing up before then).

Tin Can Beach–Food Truck Wednesdays

I got a chance to check out the food trucks at Tin Can Beach tonight.

Checkpoint Germany and Cheese Please were serving hot sandwiches at the far end of Sydney Street. Even in the rain people were coming out to enjoy some fresh eats.

Retail expansion in uptown

Historica Properties announced recently that a Picaroons Brewtique, Real Food Connections and an art gallery would be moving into their newest project at the corner of Grannan Lane and Canterbury Street.

Real Food Connections moving into Saint John should help Saint Johners to choose local fresh food. 

This move could impact the City Market vendors who close pretty early on weeknights.  Right now if you want fresh food uptown (aside from a few offers at Giant Tiger and corner stores), you have to get to the market before it closes at 6 (though most vendors start closing up before that).  In Fredericton RFC is open until 7 pm on weekdays. 

Steamers Patio

Steamers Lobster is stepping up their patio game after a 2014 where the demolition of an adjacent building got in the way.

 

Burgerology–Germain Street Burger Joint now open

Burgerology soft-opened this week. Right now they are serving grass-fed beef burgers with more options promised for coming weeks.  It was pretty busy today at lunch.
The burgers are less expensive than the previous tenant at 26 Germain Street.

Cedarcrest Gardens Winter Market

I have an opportunity to check out the Cedarcrest Gardens Winter Market on Sandy Point Road.  Along with crafts and woodworking there were several food vendors selling baking, meats, sauces and ready to eat food.

I just came across a Twitter feed for a restaurant that is opening on Grannan Lane in the old Sunstar Lounge location (between Germain St and Canterbury Street).

I’ll try to get a photo of soon.

Little Mexico Food Truck

Today for second breakfast I stopped in at the Little Mexico food truck on the Kingston Peninsula. Their beef tacos were good, and had what seemed like nice fresh ingredients.  We were given nachos and salsa to snack on as we waited for our food which was a nice touch.

I like the Little Mexico set up.  It’s a food truck with a deck, some picnic tables and umbrellas on the roadside near the Kingston Farmers Market.  I like the idea of culinary entrepreneurs serving food to the public this way. I imagine lower start up costs allow for more experimentation.  

Perhaps the rural planning regulations of the Kingston Peninsula, made setting up in this location a winning proposition. Though proximity to the busy Kingston Farmers Market has got to be put in the strengths column for a seasonal food business in greater Saint John too.

First Queen Square Market of year

The Queen Square Market was bustling today.  It was great to see so many people out and to see some of the new vendors.

Former Paramount Theatre

As the site of the former Paramount Theatre becomes more and more level, I am wondering what the new open space could mean for uptown.  While surface parking could well be in the cards, the fact that there is a big open space near King Square could lead to a few other developments or ideas. 

I wonder if the open space will provide better lighting and security for the back of several Union Street locales, possibly allowing for up-grades.

Another thing that could come out of the increase in open space is a new venue for food trucks.  The City might allow for such a use and it wouldn’t even disrupt existing parking (City regulations). With one food truck on the boardwalk (Beaver Tails) and another in KV (Funky Monkey) there could be enough appetite growing in this type of business.
