Mel Norton sworn in as Mayor

I’m pleased that the voters of Saint John have decided to take a new approach to running our city.

I’m pumped that Mel Norton is now sworn in as Mayor.

Once I’m back in SJ, I promise to post more (though I will regret when my vacation ends).

Princess and Charlotte Street

I am thinking about the heritage regulations in Saint John and what they might mean for the redevelopment of the property destroyed by fire at the corner of Princess Street and Charlotte Street.

While exact heights in the neighbourhood aren’t at my finger tips, it looks like, using Google Streetview, most the buildings are two to three storeys.

I would expect a redevelopment of the site would involved a 3 storey building with some sort of commercial ground floor (due to B3 zoning) and upper floor apartments.

I hope to see a quality building take shape on this site.

Dept. of Social Development adds $10.3 million to affordable housing budget

I’m pleased to read that the NB Department of Social Development has increased their budget for the year, including “$10.3 million for the construction and renovation of affordable housing units.”

As readers know, I support affordable housing, particularly mixed income housing. I’ve been interested in the Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) of late and it sounds like this funding may support the program. While new builds are exciting, there is a great opportunity to improve the housing stock that already exists within New Brunswick. If older apartment buildings in Saint John can be rehabilitated, we can be confident that more of our citizens are living in quality affordable housing.

The two copper sections on the south side of the Justice Complex appear to be complete.

I wonder if this has been treated to remain “copper” colour or if this will become green line many of the historic copper steeples around town.
