Crowd funding for housing start up capital

The Next 26 is an interesting affordable housing concept in Fredericton. The backers of the project are working on a project to create affordable housing that will endeavour to fill some of the housing need in Fredericton.

DC council candidate on parking requirements and housing

A blog post on Slate.com discusses the idea of reducing parking requirements for new development when transit is available, and how this could lead to more affordable housing (as costs of development would do down).  A candidate for city council in the District of Columbia (David Grosso) is quoted in the article.

Dept. of Social Development adds $10.3 million to affordable housing budget

I’m pleased to read that the NB Department of Social Development has increased their budget for the year, including “$10.3 million for the construction and renovation of affordable housing units.”

As readers know, I support affordable housing, particularly mixed income housing. I’ve been interested in the Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) of late and it sounds like this funding may support the program.  While new builds are exciting, there is a great opportunity to improve the housing stock that already exists within New Brunswick.  If older apartment buildings in Saint John can be rehabilitated, we can be confident that more of our citizens are living in quality affordable housing.
