Barge Facility

I just cam across the report entitled “The Economic Impact of the Barge Loading Facility in Saint John NB for Fabricated Steel Modules for Heavy Industry.”

Spruce Lake Barge Facility Project

I have heard that the request for qualifications (RFQ) for developing the Spruce Lake Industrial Park Barge Facility will be issued this month. 

The project could spur significant development of large scale fabrication in the Spruce Lake Industrial Park. There are already large scale manufacturers in the park, and a barge terminal could allow them to better take advantage of markets in Canada and the US.

With a lot of land available for development in the industrial park, they should be able to accommodate the growth that will come along with this development.

Saint John Industrial Parks has sent out an update on the proposed barge terminal facility for the west side. The project is supposed to encourage large scale fabrication businesses in the Spruce Lake Industrial Park.

The Spruce Lake Barge Facility Project continues to gain momentum.

Saint John Industrial Parks Ltd. General Manager, Brian Irving, indicates that he is hopeful to have funding  commitments in place by April to allow the call for quotations and construction to take place in 2013.

The project received a huge boost as the Feasibility and ROI study performed by Dr. Neil Ridler, Professor Emeritus of Economics, UNB, provided strong data around project outputs.

The baseline outputs of the project include:
175 jobs for New Brunswickers
$8.8M in anticipated GDP exports annually
$6.7M in labour income
$800,000 in Municipal/Provincial taxes annually
Saint John Industrial Parks has reserved 30 acres adjacent to the planned facility to market to additional fabricators and services providers. The GM indicated SJIP is partnering with Invest NB in efforts to grow the advanced manufacturing sector and double - or even triple - the project benefits.

Potash Exploration: economic fertilizer

It’s hard to ignore the economic impact of potash development in the Sussex region, where a lot of the fertilizer component is mined, and by extension in Saint John, where potash makes up a large percentage of dry bulk.

As such, it’s exciting news that Atlantic Potash Corp. will be exploring the Millstream potash deposit to determine if there’s an economic rational for developing a mine in the area.
