Extending the core

An oft heard criticism of the university in Saint John (UNBSJ) is that it is removed from the central business district and the cultural "uptown." Critics sometimes cite a possible inability to make connections with the business community as a symptom of this.

UNBSJ has attracted some instructors from the business community and there are some students who commute from jobs in the downtown. Still, the lack of a geographic link to the uptown can be a challenge.

This may be a problem that is potentially being solved by the business community acting for totally different reasons. An office building is being constructed on Somerset Street. This is on a major route to the university. With this, the building that houses Exit Realty and the Technology park that is home to Xerox the business community is becoming more proximate to the school.
