Higher Bus Rates

The Telegraph Journal published an opinion piece today about the unfortunate juxtaposition of Saint John Transit building a multi-million dollar headquarters and then needing to increasing bus fares.

While the bus terminal’s development costs have been defended as being part of a capital project where the commission didn’t have to pay the full built for the new facility, it is now clear the the new building has impacted operating budgets by attracting a far higher tax bill.

The editorial ends with a suggestion that decisions to increase bus fares are particularly damaging to vulnerable communities, making prudent management of this commission more important.
