Letter on heritage

The Telegraph Journal had another letter from a person less than convinced of the need to keep all "heritage" buildings intact (http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/opinion/article/222828).

A highlight of the letter from Paul Shonaman is the paragraph that reads:
"Antiquated housing left over from the days of sail cannot be tampered with in this city. Every crumbling brick edifice with twisted pair aluminum wiring, 12-foot ceilings, plaster walls, and drafty fireplaces must be painstakingly preserved. For what reason?"

The question is good and I have not heard many satisfactory answers. What is the reason for keeping all old buildings? Does keeping these things actually make us a happier, healthier or wealthier people?
