Eider Rock

Irving Oil has turned their proposed Oil Refinery in Saint John's east side up to 11. The proposed project now has a website with lots of information and visuals: http://www.irvingoil.com/company/erock.asp

I am surprised that the proposed area for the project is in Saint John city limits. I would have expected that travelling a few more kilometres east would have made the project a bit easier for the company; were the refinery to go outside of city limits the company would not be subject to the city's tax rate or regulations.

Hopefully the project moves forward in a way that benefits the citizenry of Saint John.

Bottom line is that the Irvings only care about the Irvings. Any attempts that look like they are trying to give back to the community are only 1- tax write offs 2- publicity stunts and will never make up for all the things the citizens of Saint John loose in the deal.

Our air conditions are terrible; tell anyone who doesn't believe me to take a drive to the west side on a hot windy summer day and take a deep breath. I live east....just as bad. When I have to close my windows on hot summer nights and it rains "dirt" on my garden plants, something has to be changed. And it is only going to get worse.

People go on and on about how many jobs the Irvings have brought to SJ. Bull. Fact of the matter is that if we didn't have such an eye sore at the Reversing Falls, we could have a huge hotel in that area and tourism would be at an all time high. Search some of the blogs of people who have visited SJ and they laugh at us. We are the joke. Why would we put a pulp mill on the water that is our main tourist attraction? Can you answer that?

Besides that, we have history in SJ. I didn't read your personal info so I don't know how old you are, but do you remember Loyalist Days? People used to come from all over the maritimes to celebrate the week with us. Now it doesn't even exist.

Ever try to buy a house within city limits, but away from pollution from the Irvings? Next to impossible feat. If we had more trees, more parks, less pollution, more people would be more apt to move here. More people means more business. We would be more diversified and have a more unique, more valuable work force, instead of just refinery, call center or mall jobs.

Think about it.
