Former Downey Ford – Potential location for police station

downey

From CHSJ News:

“Suggestion For Alternate Police Headquarters Site

A Saint John real estate broker says the city's proposed site for a new police headquarters poses a safety risk for pedestrians. Hodges Hamm tells CHSJ News the construction of a new building at Peel Plaza will lead to increased traffic in the area--especially if satellite police offices are closed. He says the former Downey Motors building at the corner of Crown Street and Rothesay Avenue would have easier access to major streets and the highway.
The former Downey Motors building has about 32 thousand square feet to work with and would cost 3.2 million dollars.”

There are a lot of reasons council might turn this down – the big reason I suspect we’ll hear from city hall is “we’ve spent too much on the current site already.”

Hopefully the idea will be listened to, and thoughtful consideration will be given.

In the meantime, for your reading pleasure, here is the About.com: Economics definition of Sunk Costs (emphasis added):

“Sunk costs are unrecoverable past expenditures. These  should not normally be taken into account when determining whether to continue a project or abandon it, because they cannot be recovered either way. It is a common instinct to count them, however.”

I have read a few thing's about this site...It was in the TJ a few months ago.The Owner had said they wanted to buy the site when it was a functioning business, but the price was too high. Now that the site is collecting dust as the term goes, the price has been slashed in half..don't quote me on it,but i believe it was half.It would be a perfect place for a Police HQ.Easy access to the North end,Uptown & South end down Crown street & East is right there as well.I would think it would be a hell of a lot cheaper as well.
I honestly believe that they are obsessed with the Peel Plaza location,or they are to proud to say when the cost's are too high & they should go with a scaled down project.Admit you were wrong a little bit & revise the plans! It's better than building something that drives the tax rate up even more in a city with high taxes & other problems within the city.
