Campus co-location

There’s an interesting letter to the editor in the TJ today in which the writer proposes further co-location of University and College buildings at the UNBSJ Tucker Park Campus.  Here’s the letter:

Move NBCC campus to Tucker Park

I think it is a terrible mistake to place one of the new community college buildings at Grandview Avenue. We are far better served when the students are in one area.

Grandview Avenue is not a very nice place to show off the city and will not help to keep our young people here. It's an industrial area that is very bleak looking.

The larger the mass of students and the greater the synergy, the more we can educate our young. Our NBCC and UNB campuses are too small, and we are not seen as a post-secondary community.

This new building is just a building, so maybe in future the whole campus and its programs could be sold and moved out to beautiful Tucker Park.

The present government is not going to listen to people, but I hope we can change this geographic mistake in the future.

The present NBCC campus has no character and it is in an industrial zone.

Concrete, steel and pollution are not what people want to be around in today's world.

It's just like the terrible buildings at the old General Hospital site.

We have to do what is right for the whole community.

Our elected officials do not listen to what is best for our communities; they do not see the future.

TOM CRIMMONS

With the co-location of medical buildings at Tucker Park, the idea might be the logical extension of co-operation already in place.

One large campus of students and professors could create synergies and demand for services, creating a bit of a research and maybe with the right efforts and funding an R&D hub.
