Peel Plaza Carnegie plans questioned
A number of Saint Johner’s, myself included, haven’t been big fans of the Peel Plaza plans proposed by the city.
Saint John critics are now joined by a few from-aways questioning the way the project is going to impact the city’s heritage landscape.
Fredericton architect Jon Leroux is reported as not liking the way the project requires altering the entrance to the Carnegie Building/Saint John Arts Centre. The TJ quotes Leroux:
“Basically they'll be spending a lot of money to ruin one of Saint John's best buildings.”
The Telegraph Journal also reported that the Heritage Canada Foundation is not in favour of the way the city plans on burying part of the Carnegie entrance. A spokesperson is quoted as saying:
“Either way, it's going to be seriously compromised. And it really is an outstanding example of a Carnegie Library. It's just hard to believe that either of those options are suitable.”
The spokesperson, Carolyn Quinn, also commented on perceived short-comings to the community consultation process:
“I understand from talking to people in the community there's a bit of a backlash over some of the plans. People participated in the consultation process, but a lot of them feel it was a waste of time because the project is moving forward with what they consider to be a negative impact on a lot of the historic area.”
