Rockwood Park townhouses – a new challenge for Friends of Rockwood Park
The Friends of Rockwood Park have taken up the cause to protect the city’s largest public green space. They first came to prominence by opposing the land route of the Brunswick Pipeline that was to travel through Rockwood Park – leading to a wider utility easement.
Their efforts to have the National Energy Board to force the developer to reroute the high-pressure natural gas line were not successful.
The group is again making news by opposing the city’s idea to declare more parkland surplus and have it developed with 48 townhouses. Country 94 news reports the controversy as follows:
“The group Friends of Rockwood Park is accusing the city of trying to sell off bits and pieces of the park to private developers. Common council tabled a proposal made on Monday to construct 12 four-unit townhouses on 4 acres of park property. The group says the lot has been deemed surplus to help pay for water infrastructure along Sandy Point Road. Spokesperson Joan Pearce tells CHSJ news the city is going down a slippery slope.
Pearce says development will pollute the nearby lakes and streams, and blasting on the hillsides will destroy the local ecosystems.”

The park is one of the places that i want to go to relax. i do not want to see a lot more "Private Area" signs. There are so many ways to develop the city, why they just choose destroying green parkland??
There is plenty of land around the park that is available for development - I don't see why land 'in the park' has to go up for sale.
Plus, I imagine developers would be hesitant to buy the lands, seeing that the most recent proposal to develop former Rockwood lands met with serious opposition.
