Abbey Saint Andrew: Possible April start
The Telegraph Journal reported today that the housing development proposed for the corner of Duke Street and Charlotte Street in central Saint John could be ready to start construction by the end of April 2009. Financing issues are being addressed and contractors are providing quotes.
I think this is great news for the city. With more quality housing in the uptown/south end area we will be able to retain and attract a diverse group of citizens. The development will also help address, in part, the major need for affordable housing. The Telegraph also presented some of the numbers about the development, including an estimated project cost of $14,000,000.
I agree with Abbey St. Andrew chairman Peter Jollymore who is quoted as saying:
"It's been a long struggle and it's taken a lot of work by a
lot of different people, and it's going to be great when it starts to take on a
physical reality"
