Small town New Brunswick: cuts to ferry services to change lifestyles

I like city life, but am aware that there is a rich cultural heritage in our rural communities.  Today the provincial government announced that ferry service on the lower St. John River will be cut, with three ferries (including the Gagetown Ferry) being taken out of service.

This is only a mild inconvenience for me – this will alter a route planned for a bike trip this summer, but other than that these ferries don’t fit into my travels – but this will change the way some New Brunswick citizens get around.

The mayor of Gagetown gave a passionate response to this on the CBC this afternoon, and I’m sure he’s not the only one upset.   I’m imagine plenty of ferry talk will be done tonight over St. Patrick’s Day pints across this part of New Brunswick.

Here is my conspiracy theory, the government is trying the same thing it did with the closing the University and French immersion; announce the worst thing possible, wait for protest and then say oh, well I guess we could offer a little compromise. It's tantamount to a kid saying, "dad can I have $100" and when you say no they say "$20?" it doesn't seem so bad so you give in and give it to them. Same deal they just put out worse case scenario to see how far they can push.
