Clear snow and ice from exists
While it's easy to criticize Saint John City Hall of being opaque, they have been doing a good job lately using their website to communicate about winter weather issues. Here's a good safety reminder:

Clear Snow and Ice From Emergency
Exits
The City of Saint John Fire Prevention and Investigation
Division is reminding citizens and businesses that snow and ice must not
obstruct any exits from buildings, including emergency exits and alternate
exits, as dictated by the National Fire Code of Canada. Division Officers
are finding many emergency exit doors frozen shut and/or blocked with snow due
to recent weather, and this can create dangerous circumstances in the event of
an emergency.
All ice and snow must be removed from building steps
and exit ways at least five metres from each building. Removal of
snow and ice from pathways, sidewalks and driveways will also allow emergency
responders to make their way quickly into your building. A reminder
to also remove snow piles and drifts from covering fire hydrants, fire valves,
and sprinkler hookups on buildings.
Throughout the year, all
emergency exits shall be free of obstructions such as vehicles, dumpsters , and
trash or recycle bins at all times.
Officers also remind you; you
should always know at least two escape routes from every room in your office or
home and know your exits from your building.
