Taco Pica: quality food, authenic atmosphere
Tonight I ate at Taco Pica. The restaurant is described online as: "Serving delicious and authentic Mexican, Guatemalan and Spanish cuisine in an informal setting."
I've eaten here before and have often grabbed flautas for lunch at their stall in the market.
The restaurant, founded as a co-operative by refugees who ended up in our port city, is dimly lit and has orange and green painted stippled walls. Decorated with cacti and maps of Central America, the feel is reminiscent of some of the hole in wall diners and casual restaurants I ate at while travelling in central and northern Mexico.
Tonight we had an order of nachos and I ordered a dish with chickpeas, peppers and chorizo sausage. The meal had a smokey flavor and was not too spicy. Served on rice, and after my share of chicken nachos, it was too much food for one sitting - I wasn't able to finish and packed up part of my order for a reheated lunch tomorrow.
Edited in 2020 to say I'll miss this place.
