Abbey St. Andrew
I heard today that the housing development planned for the corner of Duke and Charlotte Streets (called Abbey St. Andrew by the proponents, Church of St. Andrew St. David) expects to be receiving an approval letter from the heritage planning committee, after a successful meeting with the group last night.
The development, that will include around 90 apartments (some of them provincially subsidized for those with low incomes), looks like it will respect the heritage of the area. Along with looking appropriate, the buildings and public space that will makeup the project are meant to foster a since of community and facilitate a healthy neighbourhood feel.
The Church of St. Andrew St. David is one of many developers working on housing in central Saint John right now. Developer John Rocca is expected to break ground for a condo development in a few months, and there is a group building a modern apartment building on Queen Street that will utilize the front exterior wall of a brick building that formerly stood on the site.
