Irving Oil HQ proposal

I went to a Port authority and Irving Oil press conference about a proposal for a new Irving Oil headquarters on Long Wharf. the building is not a high rise (which could have been neat, but may have blocked views from and of Fort Howe), but it will be built to LEED standards and looks pretty well designed. The site will include public space and a cruise ship welcome area. Hopefully something like this can happen. The rendering on the right was provided on a CD as we left.

It looks very nice, but still, I heard that originally they were planning a very tall, 30 or more floor, tower. This I prefer, maybe in the North of Union area.

Long Wharf could be developed into a park or condos, but not an office complex. From the drawing it looks like a lighter version of the Regional Hospital.

I am a young civic-minded professional living in the city of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. I am interested and involved in the community and in addressing the need for quality housing. Development excites me, but I know that planning must be responsible and future-looking – with sustainability and community at the forefront in the design and building processes. In university I was involved in the campus media, and am now using Blogger as my editorial outlet. I like to walk and bicycle around the city and the suburbs taking photos of construction and other interesting activity. I post my photos and musings about architecture, development, housing and the rest at http://urbanplans.blogspot.com I work, live and play in Saint John and expect that this small city’s decades of struggles and apparent rebound colour my online creations. I also inform my opinions with local, national and international media, read far too many blogs and have Google Alerts send me updates on a multitude of items I find interesting.
