Closing poor schools

I read recently on the CBC news website a story about how the local district education council is proposing to close Lorne Middle School and Hazen White–St. Francis School. The schools are termed as being in "low-income neighbourhoods."

I understand that it could be useful for students from these and surrounding neighbourhoods to go to "wealthier" schools with more modern facilities. Still I agree with councilor Donny Snook and our new mayor Ivan Court that schools are important to maintaining and improving communities. If we want the Old North End to improve, closing down services in the area will not likely help.

The view of the councilor and mayor are not universal - it appears from the comments on the article plenty of people want the schools closed in favour of schools away from evident social problems.
