Recycling in the city centre

I had occasion to be in a City of Saint John waiting room today and read a bit of Uptown Saint John's October "Streetscope" newsletter (while not yet online it should be added to http://www.uptownsj.com/newsletter.html in the near future). The General Manager’s message was about advancements seen in the city's historic uptown. The part that stood out to me the most was the placing of “historic” garbage cans around the uptown.

While hopefully bigger news will be coming from uptown in the near future this reminded me of a something.

Our city needs to emulate what I saw in Vancouver, which is having shelves on garbage cans for recyclables so people in need can take the cans without having to demean themselves by digging through trash. It’s good for the environment, good for the impoverished and good for the cities image – this would be a small way to appear progressive.
