Council priorities

In today's Telegraph Journal (October 28, 2006) I red with interest the letter to the editor signed Brent Mason entitled Where are council's priorities? To quote the crux of the letter:
It's hard not to find it odd that council members can find the time and resources to strike a committee which ensured aesthetic standards are maintained on the North and South ends, but somehow can't find the time or vision to develop a growth plan that prevents the wholesale elimination of green space within the city.
I find the first part most interesting, as the second half could be replaced with a number of areas where the city council seems to be missing important issues.
This letter and committee remind me of what I've heard Fredericton does to skateboarders (http://oldmaison.blogspot.com/2006/10/Fredericton-police-force-against_22.html). Kids skating on sidewalks shouldn't be a priority - especially when a lot of kids are not active and these ones are.
Cities need to deal with real issues, not just trying to satisfy whinny residents.
