Main St. bike lane

Main Street bike lane to be installed this week
July 4, 2011 The City of Saint John will be installing a bike lane in the left-hand eastbound lane of Main Street between Chesley Drive and Union Street this week. This eastbound side of Main Street will be reduced to two lanes for the duration of the temporary bike lane, which will stay in place until the reopening of Harbour Passage this fall.
Motorists should note the speed limit on Main Street will be reduced to 50 km/h, and there will be no left turn from Main Street to Portland Street when traveling from Union. Access to both Portland and Hilyard Street will be available from Simonds Street.
More information on the bike lane will be available later this week. Until installation of the lane is complete, the lane remains a work zone and is off-limits to cyclists.

I dont know how safe a bike lane in the very centre of the road is going to be. Most bike lanes I've been on around the world tend to be close to the shoulder.
