Front yard gardening

As Saint John is going through its planning process and gardening is growing in popularity (at least in my peer group), I wanted to share this link: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2011/07/front_yard_vegetable_gardens_different_is_good.php

The article is about some of the reaction to a woman in Michigan who could possibility be sent to jail for supposedly violating city by-laws that could be read to mean you can’t have a vegetable garden in your front yard.

interesting article! Unbelievable??! I thought I would paste what PlanSJ currently says about local food production. There is nothing that precludes the growing or vegetables in the front yard of a property.

1.1 Local Food
Contemporary urban planning recognizes the importance of local urban food production to increase the sustainability of cities and to reduce the cost of healthy food. This Municipal Plan encourages local food production, where appropriate, in forms such as community gardens and small-scale urban agriculture. The City intends to develop appropriate standards in the Zoning Bylaw for such uses to ensure they do not negatively impact neighbours.

Council shall:
Policy NE-35 Encourage the production of local food and work to increase access to fresh food by:
a. Supporting interested groups in the development of community gardens;
b. Allowing small-scale urban agriculture, in accordance with appropriate standards; and
c. Promoting the development of larger-scale agriculture operations in appropriate rural locations.
