Historic Walking Tours

I just noticed that the City’s website has a page with maps for its Historic Walking Tours.  The maps go beyond the typical “heritage area” and are similar to the walks put on by the City last spring.

The point of these tours is to promote the built heritage outside of the current heritage preservation areas. The City has so many beautiful buildings and most of them are not protected inside a heritage area.

The tours are very interesting and you can take them yourself, using the PDF maps on the website. Form time to time the City also offers guided tours, which will be advertised in the events calendar.

These tours look very interesting.
I dropped by the city's information booth in city hall today to get a copy of the maps. Unfortunately the attendant knew nothing about them. I directed her to the city’s website to the map links. I was told they were an initiative of the Heritage Preservation Review Board.

I trucked on up to the 10th floor, but the staffer there knew nothing about the maps either, her best guess was that they weren't printed yet. I did receive a copy of “West Side Walk & Drive” - A Historic Self-guided tour of Saint John’s West Side. It’s a walking - driving tour of important landmarks in the history of the West Side. Dave Goss is responsible for compiling the information, and it’s a worth the hour & half to discover more about the city’s rich history.

The tour guides are provided when there is a scheduled walking tour, or you can print them from the website anytime you like.

There should be some on the 10th floor. I will ask the staff to print some from the website to have them available for people who would like to pick one up.
