We live in one of the Townhouses. We are supposed to be keeping some view of the harbour but most of it will be blocked by the condos. Its a bittersweet time for us, we are glad to see the city develop but its going to be a noisy time and in the end we will have less daylight, privacy and view. If we are lucky we might get some new sidewalks and perhaps a trash can!

The development is nothing but good for the City. The more people we have in the core of the City, the more services and amenities we will have.
I can sympathize with losing some of your view, however you don't own the view when you buy property, especially with land between you and the water owned by others.
The view actually hasn't been there that long. It wasn't too long ago that horrible grain elevator was there and blocked the entire view from anywhere on the Prince William side! Thank good ness that is gone. The Rocca condos will be much nicer, and will encourage people in the area to fix up their properties as well. Some of the older townhouses up on the hill are in serious need of some TLC.

Never said we did own the view. Simply stated there were some conflicted feelings. I am sure if you had an 8 story building built in front of you, you would have have some conflict as well. We work in uptown and we OWN in uptown, we take pride in our home. We try to keep upbeat about living uptown but when I see people littering (we pick up garbage everyday) and things being vandalized, and the drugs, its hard. Saint John needs an attitude adjustment, people need stop treating the uptown as a parking lot/dump. "Its better then it was" is an excuse.

People interested in views and how they can be preserved by government intervention might want to read teh Halifax bylaw that deals with this topic:

I am sure there are conflicting views from your standpoint. I can fully appreciate that, and I am sure I would feel the same way you do. We also live, work, and own a building in the uptown (not far from this development actually), and I have seen great improvements in the last few years. Take a stroll down Queen Street between Germain and Charlotte, and think back 5 years to what it used to look like - amazing transformation. That is only one street and there is tremendous work going on all around the peninsula.
Obviously it isn't perfect, with savages driving too fast, throwing litter on the road and behaving like idiots. That will all improve with the influx of new people, new property and pride in the neighbourhood. Kudos to you for picking up garbage - I do the same thing every day to and from work, and I think it makes a difference. Lead by example and the rest will eventually follow, or move on somewhere else.
