Senator John Wallace criticizes Rothesay’s Scott Avenue plan
The Telegraph Journal quotes Wallace’s reaction to Rothesay’s plan to acquire Scott Avenue apartment buildings in order to building a recreation complex:
“Quite frankly, as a resident in Rothesay, it embarrasses me that our town would be moving to effectively evict these 48 families from their homes…
… Rothesay is and should be a mixed-income community, and this project goes against the grain of the social conscience of Rothesay.”

Neither for or against these actions, one item that is overlooked in all these newspaper articles (for anyone who has actually read the consultant's report) is that the consultant recommended that the affordable units that are to be removed be replaced on the same site as part of all the new construction.
The real issue is what happens between now and when the units are replicated. Provided the town follows the recommendations, does the Town of Rothesay become a landlord in the meantime to preserve the existing units until the new ones are ready? If that is the case, could all this fuss, instead, be a win-win scenario? Everybody could avoid eviction, stay in the same neighbourhood, AND get a brand-spanking new, upgraded apartment!
