Sign of the times

I took a walk along Princess Street today and snapped this picture of Hayward and Warwick's. I wonder how old the neon sign on the building is. I also wonder if the neighbours saw the addition of the sign as an affront to the heritage character of the area or if they saw it as an exciting addition to the city's modernity.
