South End grocery store
There is no grocery store in the south end. If you want fresh food within short walking distance of the south end you have to get to the City Market by 6 on weekdays. If you want grocery items you have to go to convenience stores or chose from the small selection at Giant Tiger (which does have a decent selection, but it is limited in space).
A Facebook group was set up for people who support a South End grocery store. Apparently those involved with the group are trying to meet with Atlantic Co-op to see what can be done. This is cool, but the recent closures of a lot of Co-op stores might make this an uphill battle. I think if the South End shows strong growth in middle and high income residents over the next few years we could be a profitable niche for a grocery store chain.
Hopefully, if such a store is added to the neighbourhood, it fills some existing space, or is built with apartments or commercial space on top - it would be a shame if a one-storey building went up in the South End.
