North of Union Solution?

Does the preservation of a facade on Queen Street offer up a solution for preserving some history while still developing a large scale project in the North of Union section of Saint John?

On Queen Street in the south end an old brick building has been razed with the exception of the exterior wall facing the street. This tear down likely required some extra care and probably cost a little more but it may placate some history buffs.

If this sort of facade preservation can satisfy historic building fans, then saving the faces of brick buildings and integrating them into the police station development proposed for the North of Union area could be a winning solution.

This property is located within the Saint John Heritage Developement area. This solution was developed with the boards' approval and was an effort to allow progress, while maintaining the integrity of the original streetscape. The left and right side extensions of this facde will mirroe the existing one and help recreate the original streetscape; at the same time, 21 housing units will be created. Funding from the board helped to finance this creative solution.

I would suggest that based on your interest, that you might occassionally attend board meetings, which are fully public.
